Carrollwood Tampa Drowning Attorney - Basic Information Regarding Tampa Dry Drowning

Posted By Mandelbaum Trichler, P.A || 28-Jun-2013

With the summer temperatures rising to the mid-90s, many families will be trying to beat the summer heat in the community or backyard swimming pool. Drowning continues to be one of the leading causes of death in Florida and throughout the United States. There were approximately 9,000 drowning related deaths in the United States in the past statistical year. During that same time frame, drowning deaths were second only to motor vehicle accidents. Statistics also show that being an experienced swimmer does not necessarily play any relation to drowning. A Tampa Drowning Attorney can help families who have, unfortunately, suffered such a devastating injury or loss to a loved one.

Although not a new phenomenon, dry drowning has obtained lots of press lately following the unfortunate drowning of a young child and has worried many parents. Dry drowning can occur once water is taken in a child's lungs, mostly following a near drowning event. The child later drowns from the small amount of water that has been taken in the lungs by preventing the flow of oxygen to the brain. The drowning can occur anytime between one (1) hour and twenty-four (24) hours following a near drowning event.

It is highly recommended that parents should always continue to monitor their children, especially younger children following a long day swimming. Some of the more common signs or symptoms of a child experiencing a dry drowning event can be any of the following:

  • Changes in mood behavior
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Lethargy
  • Chest pains
  • Upper extremity pain
  • Persistent coughing
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Sweaty skin
  • Changes in skin color
